“Woah there, Hawthorne!” His firm grip on my wrist stops me from slipping into the lit-up pool beside us. “You alright?”

When he pulls me forward, my eyes land on his. Greenish blues that look like the ocean, eyes that steal your soul. Shaking my head gets the blur to disappear. “Yeah, fine.” I nod, closing my mouth. “Why?”

He chuckles, a finger grazing my arm when he reaches for the bottle in my hand. “Because you took one step and almost fell back into my pool. That’s enough for you, yeah? Something tells me you don’t usually handle this much.”

“Pft.” I wave him off, telling myself that I’m not what I am. Definitely tipsy. “I do this all the time.” A bottle of water lands in my hand and I lift it to my lips, cold relief watching over my parched tongue.

“I’m sure you do.” His gaze is hard to avoid as he takes a swig of the bottle I had. A bottle of gin. Is he thinking what I’m thinking? That we’re basically kissing right now, that bottle wrapped around his lips only on mine seconds ago?

We keep our eyes on each other as I sip the water and he sips more gin. He’s had more than I have and while his eyes are glossy, pupils dilated, my slur is a little worse. So is my sway.

Bzzz. Bzzz. Bzzz!

The phone vibrating on Adam’s patio table brings me out of my gaze, “Run Cried The Crawling” by Agnes Obel playing from his living room.

“Fuckin’ hell,” Adam mutters, flipping the phone over on the table. But right before he does, I see the name that triggers it.

Dad.

“Not gonna get that?”

His jaw ticks. “Why the hell would I?”

“It’s your birthday? I thought they’d be calling to sing you the song. Or send you a cake to make a birthday wish.”

A smirk twitches at his face. “What if I already got my birthday wish?”

My brows furrow.

Is he talking about me? Adam’s been flirty all night but given the small group he invited to his backyard party, I figured it was just slim pickings. Gemma’s type is more deep and dark while Adam is the charming party boy with a smile. That’s my kryptonite. Charm. And Adam Armstrong has a lot of it with that British meets Canadian accent alone.

Bzzz. Bzzz. Bzzz!

His phone breaks our gaze and he sighs, “I hope you’re right.” He picks up his phone, holding up a finger to give him a minute. “Hello, Father.” He swipes a small white bag off the table as he heads over to the bar in his pink trunks. My head tilts, my gaze following. They make his ass look so good. “No, I’m not having a party. Just a few friends … So you’ll listen to our neighbour but not me? She’s old and cranky. I can invite her if you want?”

The conversation escalates as I stand by the pool, unsure of what to do with myself. I never imagined I’d be at a party with Adam Armstrong.
